Fruitleather, also known as mango leather, is a vegan leather alternative made from mangoes in the Netherlands by Fruitleather Rotterdam. It is usually made from the mango skin, which is removed and then processed into leather to make everything from shoes to handbags.
How is Mango Leather made?
Fruitleather collects mangoes from a Dutch importer. Then, co-founders Koen Meerkerk and Hugo de Boon start making the vegan leather at their studio.
Mango leather is the result of something valueless turned into something that has value. Using natural additives in the production, this mango material has many of the same benefits as traditional leathers: it is strong and durable, but also soft and flexible. As a valuable sustainable material, it reduces food waste that would otherwise be thrown away. Mango fruit leather uses approximately 80% of fruit content, with no plastics, making an innovative material for leather alternatives.
